Royal Fathers and the Path to Progress: How Ikeja’s Traditional Council is Strengthening Local Economic Development

In a rare display of unity and purpose, the Council of Obas in Ikeja Local Government has reaffirmed the crucial role of traditional rulers in driving grassroots economic growth and promoting good governance.

On Thursday, October 23, 2025, the royal delegation, led by three distinguished monarchs — HRM Oba Akeem Shaibu Agbaosi, the Alaguda of Ogba-Aguda Land; HRM Oba Olusegun Adeyemi Ajasa, the Awuse of Onigbongbo; and HRM Oba Dr. Olukunmi Olusesan Akingbole, the Olu of Oregun Land — paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), at the Ikeja House.

The visit was more than a ceremonial gesture. It reflected the synergy between traditional institutions and democratic governance — a relationship that continues to shape Lagos State’s development trajectory.

The monarchs congratulated Chairman AKOD on his electoral victory and lauded his administration’s remarkable achievements within its first 100 days, describing the pace of development as “unprecedented in the history of Ikeja.” They credited his leadership success to the influence and mentorship of Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, a federal lawmaker they hailed as “a trailblazer in governance whose exemplary leadership qualities Chairman AKOD has clearly emulated.”

Their commendation underscores an important truth often overlooked — that traditional rulers are not relics of the past, but vital partners in the governance and development process. In Lagos, where communities thrive on cultural values and grassroots engagement, royal fathers remain custodians of peace, unity, and local economic stability.

Responding warmly, Chairman AKOD expressed deep appreciation for their visit and prayers, describing the royal fathers as “pillars of wisdom whose support inspires government to do more.” He reaffirmed his commitment to good governance, transparency, and people-centered leadership, vowing to sustain the “Better Days” vision that his administration promised during the campaign.

Since assuming office, AKOD’s administration has reportedly prioritized infrastructural renewal, social welfare, and inclusive governance — all crucial pillars for local economic expansion. His openness to collaborate with traditional leaders, he said, will ensure that peace and development reach every ward in Ikeja.

The royal fathers, in turn, offered special prayers for peace, love, and prosperity in the local government, invoking divine wisdom for the chairman and his team.

Their presence at the Ikeja House was a reminder that development is a collective effort, and that when the modern machinery of government works hand in hand with the age-old influence of traditional leadership, communities are bound to flourish.

Indeed, as Lagos continues to set the pace for urban growth and innovation in Nigeria, the model partnership between Chairman Akeem Dauda and the Ikeja Council of Obas exemplifies how blending cultural heritage with progressive governance can sustain peace, drive entrepreneurship, and strengthen the economic heartbeat of the state.
