IGP Egbetokun Dismisses Alleged Promotion Scandal, Affirms Police Promotions Are Merit-Based
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the credibility and transparency of the Nigeria Police Force’s promotion process, insisting that there is no promotion scandal within the Force.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony held at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where 923 senior officers were decorated with their new ranks, the IGP emphasized that the recent elevation of senior officers — including a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and Commissioners of Police (CPs) — reflects the Force’s commitment to rewarding excellence and integrity.
The ceremony brought together top police executives, serving officers, and families who gathered to celebrate the honourees’ dedication, discipline, and years of selfless service to the nation.
Addressing speculations about irregularities in the promotion process, IGP Egbetokun stated emphatically that “there is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force,” adding that promotions are based strictly on merit, diligence, and competence.
He further charged the newly promoted officers to embrace technology-driven and intelligence-led policing, as well as strengthen community partnerships to enhance crime prevention and improve public confidence in law enforcement.
“The future of policing in Nigeria lies in innovation, collaboration, and public trust,” the IGP noted, encouraging officers to demonstrate leadership rooted in fairness and accountability.
IGP Egbetokun expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support towards police reforms and welfare enhancement, while commending the Police Service Commission (PSC), led by DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), for ensuring transparency and professionalism in the conduct of promotion exercises.
Concluding his address, the Police Chief dismissed recent criticisms surrounding the Force’s promotion system as unfounded, reiterating that every promotion conducted under his administration has been strictly merit-based and transparent.
