In a move to foster sports development and youth empowerment, the Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has pledged support for the Nigerian Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) ahead of the forthcoming African International Wrestling Championship.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, received the NPWF delegation led by its National President, Chief John Uche, during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Chief Uche said the visit was to formally inform the Command about the championship, scheduled to hold from October 18 to 19, 2025, at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State. He explained that the event will feature wrestling legends and rising stars from Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and several African countries.

According to him, the international competition aims to showcase Nigeria’s wrestling potential while empowering more than 100 Nigerian youths through grassroots sports development. He added that the Federation’s broader mission focuses on curbing youth restiveness, reducing poverty, and creating sustainable employment through sports initiatives.

In his remarks, Comptroller Onyeka commended the Federation for its commitment to youth and sports development, describing the partnership as timely and impactful. He assured that the Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, psc(+), remains steadfast in supporting programs that contribute to national growth and youth engagement.

He noted that the Service has consistently backed various sporting activities across the country and will continue to collaborate with organizations that use sports as a tool for empowerment and nation-building.

The highlight of the visit was the unveiling and presentation of the championship trophy to Comptroller Onyeka, alongside an award of excellence from the NPWF leadership, symbolizing partnership and mutual commitment toward the success of the upcoming tournament.
