Two Dead, Four Rescued as Building Collapses in Yaba

Tragedy struck late Friday night when a three-storey building under construction collapsed at No. 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, in the Yaba area of Lagos State, leaving two people dead and several others injured.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Acting Head of the Lagos Command of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Ibitayo Adenike, said that emergency responders recovered two male bodies while four men were rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to Adenike, the structure collapsed around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, trapping several workers beneath the debris. She added that the exact number of people still trapped could not be determined until the site was fully cleared.

“Four men have been rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment,” she said. “Search and rescue operations are ongoing.”

Emergency agencies, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and the Nigeria Police Force, were on the ground to coordinate rescue efforts.

Earlier reports from TVC News indicated that at least eight construction workers were initially rescued from the rubble following the collapse, which occurred around 7:46 p.m. on Friday, September 12. Three male adults were pulled out alive during the initial phase, while search efforts continued for two others believed to be trapped.

As of press time, rescue operations were still ongoing, with authorities urging residents to stay clear of the site to allow emergency teams full access for recovery and investigation.
